The Role of a CNA

Wessington Springs SD CNA greeting patientCertified Nursing Assistants perform many duties in the Wessington Springs SD hospitals, clinics and other medical organizations where they work. Per their title, CNAs are not licensed by the state but instead are certified. Because they are not licensed, they perform under the direction and oversight of either a licensed LPN or RN. And as nursing assistants, their primary job duty is to aid the licensed nurses that they work under. Their responsibilities are numerous and varied, and in a hospital setting may include:

  • Administering basic care to patients
  • Taking patient’s vital signs
  • Keeping a record of patient’s health status
  • Bathing and dressing patients
  • Serving and aiding patients with meals
  • Conveying patients to other areas

CNAs may also work in Wessington Springs SD nursing homes or long term care facilities. In those environments, nursing assistants are more involved in aiding patients with their Activities of Daily Living (ADL). ADLs are identified as routine activities that most individuals perform daily without aid, for example eating, dressing, or using the restroom. Nursing assistants usually build more of a bond with these patients since they often reside in the facilities for prolonged periods of time. Often, they may end up being the pipeline between the patient and the rest of the medical staff because of their relationships with their charges. Because of this, the CNA’s expertise can be an useful resource for preparing the proper care and treatment of long term care patients.

CNA Certificates

Wessington Springs SD CNA holding babyIn contrast to many other licensed nurses, certified nursing assistants do not have to earn a college degree. CNA training can be obtained at community colleges or at Wessington Springs SD vocational or trade schools. The duration of the instruction can take anywhere from just one to three months, resulting in either a certificate or a diploma. Within the 1987 Nursing Home Reform Act, students are mandated to have at least 75 hours of instruction, 16 of which have to be clinical or “hands-on” training hours. Bear in mind that this is the minimum period of instruction directed and each state has its specific requirements. So it’s essential to make sure that the course you enroll in not only complies with the federal requirements, but additionally those for the state where you will be practicing. One recommendation is to get in touch with the health or nursing board for your state to make sure that the training is state approved. In addition to the training, each state requires a passing score on a competency test for certification. Depending on the state, there might be other prerequisites as well.

Online CNA Classes

student attending online cna classes in Wessington Springs SDEnrolling in CNA classes online is growing into a more popular way to obtain training and earn a certificate or diploma in Wessington Springs SD. But since the balance of the training may be accessed online, this method may be a more convenient answer to finding the free time to attend school for some students. Regarding tuition, many online CNA programs are cheaper than other on campus choices.
